ESL Advice for Teachers |
From - The Daily Yomiuri Online
Q: I teach English at a Japanese family's home in the Philippines.
The youngest in the family, a first grader, likes English and during
the 20-minute lesson he often raises his hand and asks me questions in
Japanese, like: "kyukyusha wa, eigo de, nan desu ka?" Is it OK if I
allow him to ask questions in Japanese, and is it OK if I answer his
questions?
D.C.
Teacher
Manila
A: You are off to a good start since the first grader likes English
and appears to have a healthy, natural curiosity. Since I am a big
believer in teaching English in English, I would encourage you to set
up an English only rule without squelching his precious curiosity. You
can do this by teaching him how to ask simple questions in English. For
example, you could teach him how to ask, "How do you say 'kyukyusha'?"
or "How do you say 'kyukyusha' in English?" You could make it into a
game for him.
Student: How do you say "kyukyusha" in English?
Teacher: Ambulance. Can you repeat that?
Student: Ambulance.
Teacher: Can you repeat it again?
Student: Ambulance.
Teacher: Yes, that's good. Now how do YOU say "kyukyusha" in English?
Student: Ambulance.
Teacher: Yes, ambulance! Nice English!
By using this formula, you accomplish three things: One, you feed
into and satisfy the student's curiosity. Two, you empower the student
in enabling him to be able to ask the question in English. Three, while
helping him expand his vocabulary, you entice him to get into a simple
dialogue with you, which enables you to interact with each other in
English and recycle the word. This increases his chance of remembering
it. It's a win-win situation for the both of you!
